I had been searching for the right pair of headphones for my Ipod Touch for weeks on end, reading the reviews and published opinions in all the audio/video forums. I already own the UE Super.fi 5 Pro canal phones and they are great indeed, but I was wanting a set of headphones for both work and home that were easier to put on and take off. You have to fidget with canal phones to get the seal right. I decided based on reviews to buy the Sennheiser HD555. I was interested in the various Bose headphones, but they just seemed way overpriced. In the end, however, I was very disappointed in the HD555’s - so much so that I went right out and purchased the Bose On-Ear headphones. The Bose On-Ear headphones are very similar to the Quiet Comfort 3’s, but without the noise canceling feature and are about half the price. In comparing the Bose to the Sennheiser, I played an orchestra/vocal mp3, “Gollum’s Song”, with Emiliana Torrini, recorded at 320 sampling rate, and the HD555 sounded better than the Bose, richer midrange, more clearly defined…But. The Bose did quite well with this and other orchestra pieces too and just gave such a more well-rounded performance on all different types of music than the HD555 did. Amongst many other songs, I listened to the Beatles’ “Come Together” and the HD555’s disappointed badly there, and I had to turn the EQ bass booster on to get any satisfaction at all from it. The Bose were very nice with no EQ, just the right amount of bass, both felt and heard. Not muddy at all, but deliciously warm. You know, I think that the Bose On-Ears have more weaknesses than the Sennheiser HD555’s, but it is sometimes more helpful to describe the way a headphone’s sound makes you feel rather than a technical breakdown of the strengths and weaknesses of a particular set, and in that way I would say that the Bose On-Ear’s are a kind of comfy chair that satisfies emotionally; and even if the chair is not perfect you are feeling very good in it, and you lounge and sigh with contentment. In comparison along the same emotional lines, the Sennheiser HD555 is an evenly padded chair, firm and not uncomfortable and no doubt has all the things in it that should make it a better chair than the Bose. But somehow it doesn’t. If you are using an IPod, I think you’ll be happier with the Bose On-Ear headphones than most other phones. They are good for the office too because they are small, they only leak a little sound and they block outside sounds quite well. And yes, they seem very comfortable too. I found the right ones for me.

In this review of boes headset, I’m going to show you both the good and the bad. After all, what’s a review without some honesty, right? First, I have to tell you upfront that boes headset is my favorite choice. Sure, there’s other products in the same class, but frankly, none of them as good (in terms of quality). I am not an audiophile - I do not have the precision hearing of a bat so I can echo-locate my breakfast. I know some folks are far more particular and can hear nuances in sound that are apparently not within my range of hearing. If you’re like me - this review is for you.

Like shoes, it’s hard to review something as a comfortable fit for everyone. I can only review something as being a comfy fit for me. Everyone’s head and ears are designed differently. If you have a mammoth head or large ears, these may not fit you as well as they fit me. I’d recommend trying a pair on - they are sold at fine electronic stores and they usually have a pair you can try on and listen to.

First, I would try wearing them with no audio at all. Just stand there for 5 minutes with these things on. Do they bug you? If so, they’re not for you.

Personally, I find the soft cups that pivot for the precise shape of my head to be very comfy. The cups envelope my ears without scrunching them - just surrounding them with the music or audio I want to listen to. The bass is deep - even with the volume cranked way up, I don’t feel like either the treble or bass is cracking.

They’re not as trendy looking as the miniscule ear buds everyone wears these days - but for complete solitude in listening to an audio book, mowing the lawn while listening to music, or just tuning out white noise while listing to something relaxing, these are nice.

My less than perfect rating is for the kinda cheesy-looking plastic and foamy headband. The headband is a magnet for dog hair (guess how I found that out?) and the plastic components just look cheap. It doesn’t matter how good the sound is - when you spend this kind of money, it’s nice to know you can enjoy looking at an item, too. This is why Sony & Apple do so well with their products - they work AND they are sexy to look at. These are just - eh. They’re ok, but nothing to write home about in the appearance department. I know from their full-page print ads and infomercials that sound engineers and all kinds of research and rocket science goes into their audio equipment - but they seriously need to work with an award winning designer to come up with a better look. If they canned half their ad campaign and devoted some of that money to design, they could lower the price and these things would sell like hotcakes.

The tips fit fine and I suppose they’re reasonably priced. The problem is that the dang things pop off so easily from the headphones, necessitating this purchase in the first place.

I keep the headphones coiled around my iPod. When I pull the bundle out of a jacket or pants pocket, I’d say once in about 10 times one of the tips will come off, either falling on the floor at that instant, which is easy to find, or becoming loosened enough that they can fall off without warning later (which is the more troublesome problem)

I own these headphones and only wore them around the house. You don’t buy these headphones for working out in, I have some $10 headphones for that. Ironically though, those headphones don’t just suddenly break because of what seems to be some flaw in design or weakness in the plastic. I am one of many unfortunate buyers who have suffered the headphone piece breaking off right beside the ear cone. I was simply pulling them off my head and they broke. If you are going to spend this much money for something, you deserve to know the disappointing experiences owners are having.
