I have to also disagree with the one “reviewer” who hated these earphones. One assumes that if you are willing to spend over $150 for a pair of earphones you would take the time to understand how to use them. The one downside to these earphones is that you need to take 10 minutes to understand how to insert them into your ear. I did that 6 years ago with my original pair and fell in love. There are also videos on the Etymotic site to help you with inserting the earphones. The isolation is second to none and if inserted correctly you get the proper amount of base. BTW, I am still using my original pair several times a week with no issues.

Good:
Sounds I haven’t heard before, I am re-listening to all of my music because they are so clear and sharp. I love them, and I did a lot of research and don’t know what else is much better.
Bad:
1. Sound when you rub on the coiled part of the headphones(Micro phonics). I wear the clip a lot.
2. They do stick out of my ear a bit too far, can’t lie down on my side with them on.
3. The bass isn’t all that powerful, the sound is incredible crisp, detailed, and amazing, but it isn’t necessarily all that ‘rich’ or ‘heavy’. I mean you can still hear the bass, just you might think, “I could do with a little more” if you listen to some certain genres.
Conclusion: I was thinking about getting the SE530s but, I really like these now - really because of the details in the sound.

I got these on the recommendation of a radio show host. They are expensive so I assumed that the sound would be good. Not so. They sound tinny, like really cheap earphones. You are supposed to shove them into your ears really far–uncomfortable. And you have to look really close to see the “R” & “L” letters on them. Why not have a small color code.
I’d recommend Vmoda or Shure, but not these.

Respectfully differ with previous reviewer. Bought these based on CNET review as well as others. Bought and tried an expensive eSure earbud first but found them uncomfortable for my ears. Ended up giving those puppies away and moving to the ER4. With foam sleeve these are very comfortable and the sound isolation is excellent. I wear them primarily when traveling, and while they don’t shut out all the airplane noise, they dampen it very well. When listening to softer music or classical I sometimes have to increase the volume a little but most of the other music I listen to (wide variety) is fine once volume set. I think the sound quality is excellent. I am not a serious audiophile but am musical and have a very good ear, for what that’s worth. The convenience factor of the little leather case is nice, too. Just toss it in my briefcase or purse with ipod and I’m set.

Not certain insertion of the earpieces is ‘healthy’ for the middle ear canal without cleaning after each use. Certain most users will not do this. Also, certain that earplugs costing 1/4 would boast same quality. Money not an issue with me…quality is although. Had to alter equalizer settings on both ends to get a semi audiophile output. OK for an IPod I guess… TT
