Pros:
These are without a doubt the highest quality earplugs on the market. They take only a second or two to insert properly. Once inserted, they are completely forgettable, meaning they cause absolutely no discomfort, for as long as you care to wear them.
Cons:
Although they are billed as “high fidelity,” there is really no such thing as a high fidelity earplug. High fidelity earplugs sound more like foam earplugs with more treble than they do like non attenuated sound.
Don’t bother wearing these plugs with a hoodie or woolcap. They are going to rub against the ends of the plugs jutting out from your ear and generate a lot of noise.
Can’t sleep with them either, since they jut out.
Overall: best in class, and appropriate for any situation requiring noise attenuation, except perhaps, stupid loud environments.

I purchased these based on the reviews here as well as iLounge. I listen to a wide variety of music and wanted a neutral sound that had a fair balance of highs and lows. Classical music, especially the pianos sound great, Rock is good although the lows are often drowned out by the highs, R&B and Hip-Hop are very disappointing. The low end is practically nonexistent, often even sounds tinny. I used all the included earpieces to ensure I found the best fit, I even purchased a third party earpiece thinking the lack of lows was due to an improper fit. The lows are still barely noticeable.
I purchased another set of earphones due to my disappointment and used the third party earpiece and viola! Bass and clean lows.
The only reason I’m giving this product 3 stars rather than anything lower is because the mid and highs are great enough to make you notice things you were missing in your music. The separation and isolation are awesome, but I can’t get over the fact that even in the description it states the ER6is have better bass than ER6s yet they still come in weak on the low end.

The product is made with lightweight wire which pulled free of the iPod plug within 5 months. Etymotic wanted $76 to replace them “under warranty.” That’s not going to happen.

I had to buy many items just to understand that er 6 headphones was the top choice for the price. The only thing negative I’ve found were that better units are available, but these units are much more costly and the reviews I found on were usually on the negative side of things. So here’s my final word. I 100% endorse er 6 headphones and will even show you some places to get it even cheaper than retail.

I got the ER4S because I needed a pair of high impedance headphones that could go unnoticed in the office while providing a decent load for a vacuum tube headphone amplifier. The sound isolation of these headphones is impressive, but even more so is the detail. I can hear things that even good over the ear headphones cannot reveal. The response seems flat (as in accurate), and drops off a bit on the bass end, but it’s well worth the sacrifice for top notch listening in the office without having huge cans on your head.
Most earbuds are super high efficient and low impedance which is fine for cheap portable devices, but for high impedance I’ve not found any earbuds that present a 100 ohm load which is good for more serious amplification equipment.

What a great product. I spent weeks agonizing over what IEM to buy. I thought about Westone 3’s and UM2’s, Shure 530’s, the Ultimate Ear Triplefl.10 and Superfl.5’s, and the Etymotic ER-4P’s. I really wrestled with paying $400 for IEM’s. I read so many positive reviews of the ER-4P’s that I decided to risk it. After all for under $200, the price was definitely right. What a great purchase! Tight bass, brilliant highs, and a great sound stage. They are so comfortable, I couldn’t be more pleased.
At the same time I purchased the Monster Beat IEM’s for my 16 year old son. He loves them. They do sound good; but, they do not remotely compare to my ER-4P’s. I am contemplating a headphone amp for my next purchase to further enhance the listening experience of my Ipod. Although, after this purchase I am not sure it is really needed!

Etymotic is certainly well know for high quality audio gear, however I’m certainly impressed how inexpensive these were. This is one of the best prices I found. They do appear authentic, of good quality, and come with a small plastic case.
As a warning, these do go very deep within the ear canal, and as such they may be uncomfortable for those not used to them. It can also take a little fussing to get them how you want them, but that’s the rub.
